Juniper Shieldbug

10th March 2012
I saw this shieldbug in the garden but wasn't sure of the type. I though I would bring it indoors for a "studio" shot.
Once on the PC, I could see that this shieldbug had something stuck to it. I thought at first it might be a tiny tick, but then realised that it was much too small. I posted the image on iSpot and had a suggestion that the egg was from a parasitic tachinid fly. Fascinating! The flies choose a spot for the egg where the "host" will find it most difficult to remove.
